The city was founded in 1190 by German settlers or Transylvanian Saxons. It was built on a Roman settlement known to the early Middle Ages as Caedonia, apparently unoccupied at the time of arrival of the Saxons.
In the fourteenth century, the town was an important commercial center in the region. In 1376 the craftsmen were grouped into 19 different unions. Sibiu became the most important cities in the seven ethnic German who gave the name of Transylvania Siebenb RGEN in German (literally “seven cities”). Furthermore, Sibiu became the seat of the Universitas Saxorum, the Assembly of Germans in Transylvania. In the seventeenth century, the public recognized Sibiu as the easternmost city in the European sphere, it was also the eastern most point reached by the end andalusia postal routes.

During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the city became one of the most important Romanian culture of the region.
