One of the National Hospital under the Ministry of Health (MOH) in Panama that specializes in management and recovery of chronic diseases – degenerative and terminal. Currently being restructured into a national institution specialized nursing and rehabilitation, the future Hospital or National Institute of convalescence and rehabilitation.
History
In 1904 Americans identified 7 people who lived isolated and suffered from Hansen’s Disease. It was then that Colonel Gorgas, Chief of Health of the American government in Panama in 1905, manages to get an item of 25,000.00 on behalf of the American Congress for the construction of a facility that will provide care to this group of people.
On April 10, 1907 inaugurated the hospital, with 10 patients, being a completely isolated installation with access only by sea.
Since 1907, the hospital has changed its name several times as the Aguadilla, Leper Asylum Palo Seco Leper Colony Palo Seco Palo Seco leper colony and finally in 1964 is defined as giving the name Hospital Hospital in Palo dry.
It is not until 1 October 1979, thanks to the Torrijos’ Carter, his administration reverts to Panama.
In 1996 he was reclassified as a tertiary hospital care and is given the name Long Hospital Stay, thus establishing gerontes with attention to chronic degenerative diseases or terminals and finally on 2 July 1998, according to Resolution 276 is set the switch to its current name, National Hospital for Extended Stay with which redefines its goal of providing quality care to all individuals nationwide.
Justification
Currently, the Panamanian population is in a transition stage, a young man to a mature society. This results in increased health care costs because these patients come 3 times to general hospitals in search of specialized attention and consume between 35 to 40 of hospital stays, plus there have been studies that determined that 36 of these patients return to re-enter once discharged from these general hospitals.
Restructuring
For all the above reported that in 2008, starting a new process of attention to the change of mission, vision and philosophy of care, involved in the recovery process to address this public health problem and thus have a positive impact on the use of different bed general hospitals and thus avoiding the crises that occur hospitalizations in emergency rooms.
Looking towards this goal is currently restructuring the current hospital to a facility specializing in the management of recovery from chronic diseases’ degenerative and terminal which was transformed into a future in a specialized institution nationwide nursing and rehabilitation, Hospital or the future National Institute of convalescence and rehabilitation, where an institution will have structural adaptations and the quantity and quality of human resources and expertise for the direct care of these patients, so their attention technifying humanely, scientific and professional and ultimately improve the quality of life of our Panamanianpopulation.
